Reliability-Centered Maintenance (RCM)

A structured process for deciding the right maintenance strategy for each asset, based on how it fails and what that failure actually costs.

RCM starts from a question most maintenance programmes skip: for this specific asset, what are the ways it can actually fail, and does each failure mode justify preventive maintenance, condition monitoring, or just running it to failure and fixing it after? The answer is different for every asset, which is the whole point.

It's more rigorous than most facilities need to apply everywhere, but the underlying logic — not every asset deserves the same maintenance strategy, and the decision should follow from failure consequence, not habit — is worth applying at least to the assets a criticality analysis flags as high-impact.
