A 100% OEE score means an asset ran with zero stoppages, at full designed speed, producing zero defects — a theoretical ceiling almost nothing reaches. The value of OEE is less the number itself and more which of the three factors is dragging it down, because each points to a different fix.
The three factors
- Availability — time actually running versus time scheduled to run; low availability points at unplanned downtime and breakdowns
- Performance — actual speed versus designed speed; low performance points at minor stops, jams and cycle-time creep
- Quality — good units versus total units produced; low quality points at defects, rework and scrap
Why maintenance teams track it
OEE is the metric that connects maintenance work to output the rest of the business actually cares about. A maintenance team can report a healthy PM completion rate while OEE quietly drifts down — OEE is the check that the maintenance programme is translating into real throughput, not just paperwork.
