GTP is the operating principle behind most modern AS/RS and shuttle deployments — the picker never leaves their station; storage-and-retrieval automation, an AMR, or a shuttle system brings the right tote or pallet to them. It's a major driver of the density and throughput gains automated warehouses report over manual, walk-to-pick operations.
The trade-off is concentration of risk: a manual pick operation degrades gracefully when a picker calls in sick (a small percentage output drop); a GTP system with a single point of automated failure can drop output far more sharply, which is exactly why the maintenance programme behind it carries more weight than in a manual operation.
